KUCHING: The dwellers in Kampung Sambir, Asajaya can heave a sigh of relief as the internet connectivity in their village will be improved with the installation of Temporary Wifi (WS).
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said besides the village, the programme will also involve 200 other areas which are in need of improved internet connectivity.
“The WS will be completed soon to enable permanent connection at the telecommunication tower.
“The project also includes the installation of very-small-aperture terminal (VSAT) into rural areas as an interim solution for the construction project of the first 300 telecommunication towers across our state,” he said.
He said this in a Facebook post after attending a briefing with the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) today.
Abdul Karim said the state government’s target for total internet coverage state-wide by 2025 is a boon to rural dwellers.
“So far, our government has built more than 170 telecommunication towers out of the 300 targeted under the project by SMA.
“Our state government has also applied to the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (MCMC) to grant a license to Sarawak to enable the state government to develop broadband internet in certain areas,” he said.
The Asajaya assemblyman said he has discussed with Telekom Malaysia and SMA to expand the fibre optic network in the Samarahan Division.
“We are grateful the SMA has prepared a telecommunications development plan in the Sambir area to enable the villagers to enjoy improved communication service quality,” he said.
