Uni5G: TM teases 5G is coming soon on Unifi Mobile

While we wait for telcos to conclude their 5G access agreements with Digital Nasional Berhad, Telekom Malaysia has started teasing its upcoming 5G service on Unifi Mobile. From the teaser, it appears that their 5G service will be branded as Uni5G and it will be available soon.

The Uni5G page is already up on Unifi’s website but it doesn’t provide much information except for some teasers of what 5G can do for you. Besides high-speed downloads, it promises to offer lag-free gaming, no more freeze-frames for video calls, ability to upload 4K videos anytime and binge video content in 4K.

TM has also refreshed the Unifi Mobile logo which now looks like a smiley face made with two circles and a semi-circle. There are no new plan details yet but the current postpaid offering such as the Unifi Mobile Postpaid Ultimate for RM59/month (on contract) are still listed as 5G Ready.

TM has also included a coverage checker on the site which you can toggle to show 5G coverage only. Besides the Klang Valley, there’s also 5G coverage in Perak, Penang, Kelantan, Johor and most recently Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. The 5G coverage is deployed by DNB, Malaysia’s 5G single wholesale network.

Last year, TM was the first telco to announce that it will offer 5G services to consumers under DNB’s pilot trial. Their product pages previously hinted that Unifi Mobile postpaid customers will be able to enjoy 5G in February but the plan was postponed indefinitely.

At the moment, YTL Communications’ Yes 5G remains the first and only telco to offer commercial 5G services to consumers. A few weeks ago, Telekom Malaysia along with three other telcos signed their respective conditional share subscription agreement to take a stake in DNB. According to DNB, telcos that have signed are expected to roll out 5G services starting this month. In order to get access to the 5G network, DNB has shared recently that a total of 6 telcos have signed letters locking the terms of the access agreements. The telcos have until the end of October to execute the agreement in order to provide 5G services to consumers.
